Noongar Six Seasons in Western Australia

  • Birak (December – January)
  • Bunuru (February – March)
  • Djeran (April – May)
  • Makuru (June – July)
  • Djilba (August – September)
  • Kambarang (October – November)

Birak (December-January)

Rainfall decreases, and the arrival of warm weather is more noticeable during the Birak season. During the afternoons, sea breezes from the southwest help keep the temperatures mild. It’s also the perfect time for the young frogs to finish their change into maturity as the temperatures rise and the rainfall decreases.

Bunuru (February-March)

During Bunuru, the temperatures are at their highest, and there is little to no rainfall. To take advantage of the favorable weather conditions along the coast, rivers, and estuaries, this has historically been and continues to be a terrific season for living and fishing. As a result, freshwater foods and seafood account for a significant portion of the diet at this time of year.

Djeran (April-May)

During the Djeran season, there is a respite from the extreme heat. The arrival of cold evenings, which bring a dewy presence in the early mornings, is a significant signal of the shift in season. The wind direction and strength will shift with the seasons, with gentle breezes often blowing from southerly directions throughout the summer.

Makuru (June-July)

In the southwest, Makuru has the coldest and wettest months of the year. It used to be an excellent time to move away from the coast because the wind started to move to the west and south. This brought cold weather, rain, and sometimes snow to the peaks of the Stirling and Porongurup Ranges.

Djilba (August-September)

In Djilba, the weather is in the midst of a transitional period, with some freezing and clear days interspersed with warmer, rainier, and windier days, with the odd bright day thrown in for good measure. This marks the beginning of the gigantic blossoming explosion in the South West each year. This begins with yellow-flowering plants such as acacias.

Kambarang (October-November)

Kambarang, also known as the season of birth, begins in earnest in October as we move towards the autumnal harvest. Wildflowers and increasing temperatures throughout this season, which lasts from October to November and is the fifth season on the Noongar calendar, are abundant.
